Beauty of the psalms

I just love the psalms ... they're so raw with honest emotion and my eyes do pop at how some of them rail and rant against their enemies. The psalmists were not afraid to be naked emotionally before God. It shows complete trust for a God who knows their innermost thoughts. Even today, when I read some of their cries, I feel an answering cry within me.

My reading for today. Psalm 55:1-8

Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;
hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
at the voice of the enemy,
at the stares of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering upon me
and revile me in their anger.

My heart is in anguish within me;
the terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling have beset me;
horror has overwhelmed me.
I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest-
I would flee far away
and stay in the desert;
I would hurry to my place of shelter,
far from the tempest and storm."

It is a wonder how the Psalms are often quoted in many churches and yet Christians still say, "Eh, you cannot be angry wan... Christians are not supposed to behave that way! Jesus say love your enemy mah."

Yeah... I try to love my enemy, but it doesn't mean I have no emotions! I'm only human!

The Psalms were written by a man after God's own heart yet struggling against his own flesh. We are all imperfect, and honesty becomes very important in our relationship with God. Being dishonest, and pretending, only puts a wedge between him and us.

Afterall, what is a relationship without trust.

The range of human experience covered in this 150 Song Album is simply unbeatable. The voices we hear when reading them allows what's going on inside us to surface before our intimate almighty (I often find reading scriptures aloud having a more engaging impact because the ears are involved too!) and then when it's all in the open the tenderly powerful hand of God brings healing and wholeness ... in sacrad moments like this one not only is able to hear our own voice (or others), we're more ready to hear HIS voice ...
